US military programs, notably the Army Research Laboratory’s Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance from 2010 to 2020, financed university work at MIT and the University of Pennsylvania on lightweight actuators and leg-mounted motors that removed heavy central gearboxes. These advances produced the Mini Cheetah platform, whose dimensions and actuator specifications later appeared, to the millimeter, in Unitree’s Go-series quadrupeds. The research was published openly, a standard practice intended to accelerate the broader field.

Unitree, founded in 2016 by Wang Xingxing, used the publicly available designs to develop low-cost models such as the $1,600 Go2. The company now reports annual sales exceeding 18,000 quadrupeds and 5,500 humanoids, supported by domestic clusters of motor, gear, and magnet suppliers. Chinese state media have shown armed variants of its B1 and Go2 platforms operating with People’s Liberation Army units, even though the firm states its products are intended for civilian use.

In contrast, US firms that originated the same technology, including Ghost Robotics, have produced only limited volumes at far higher unit costs. Boston Dynamics’ Spot employs a different technical approach and has likewise remained a low-volume product. US policymakers have responded with export controls and a Federal Communications Commission import ban on future Chinese quadruped and humanoid models, yet analysts note that these measures do not address the absence of comparable domestic manufacturing capacity or component supply chains.

Researchers involved in the original programs argue that open publication itself was not the problem; rather, the United States lacks coordinated mechanisms to translate defense-funded prototypes into scaled production. They point to China’s state-directed capital allocation and vertically integrated supplier base as the decisive factors that converted early US innovations into widely deployed, defense-relevant systems.
