Cursor Router

Summary
Cursor Router is an intelligent model router that now drives the Auto mode in the Cursor coding environment. The system evaluates each incoming request and directs it to an appropriate model, assigning frontier models to tasks that require higher capability while routing simpler work to price-efficient alternatives. This approach aims to balance performance with cost by operating along the cost-intelligence Pareto frontier.
Users can select from optimization modes labeled Balance and Intelligence. Both modes charge according to the actual model selected for each request rather than a fixed rate. The router remains active across desktop, web, iOS, CLI, and SDK interfaces, and it is enabled by default for Teams plans.
Administrative controls allow team or group-level configuration. Admins can enable or disable the router, limit which optimization modes are available to members, establish a default mode, and explicitly allow or block specific underlying models. Enterprise customers manage these settings through the dashboard.
Why it matters
This update is highly relevant for product teams and builders as it introduces automated cost-performance optimization for AI coding tasks. The ability for admins to allow or block specific models is particularly valuable for Dutch and EU teams managing GDPR compliance and data privacy.
