AI companions may worsen loneliness for vulnerable users

Stanford research finds that users with limited social networks who seek emotional support from AI chatbots experience lower well-being.
Summary
Stanford researchers examined how users engage with persona-based chatbots on the Character.AI platform, where individuals can create and converse with simulated companions. Drawing on survey responses from 1,131 users and full chat transcripts from 244 participants, the team combined automated analysis tools with established psychological measures to assess motivations, interaction intensity, self-disclosure patterns, and subjective well-being.
The results showed that users who turned to these systems primarily for companionship and who maintained smaller offline social networks reported lower well-being and greater loneliness after sustained use. Although many participants described their chatbots in relational terms such as “friend” or “partner,” the interactions lacked the reciprocity that normally accompanies human self-disclosure, and the platforms are explicitly designed to sustain engagement regardless of content. Researchers characterized this pattern as “social junk food”: an immediately accessible substitute that fails to deliver the relational nutrients required for lasting emotional health and may further reduce real-world contact.
The study also noted that intense use correlated with poorer outcomes when participants shared sensitive personal material, an effect opposite to the benefits typically observed in human relationships. In response, the authors call for clearer public information on these risks and for the development of targeted safeguards, including usage caps and automated redirection to human support resources when conversations indicate acute distress.
